Hotels in the UK - star ratings explained

Usually when you book a hotel online, you will be informed of the hotel's star rating. Hotels are usually rated between one and five stars dependent upon their size and the services that they provide. This ShoppingTrolley guide has been written to give you information on what the star ratings mean, so you will have more idea as to what is meant by "five star".

Ratings in the UK

Hotels in the United Kingdom are assessed by AA inspectors, in association with the UK tourist boards for England, Scotland and Wales. This has been done in order to get equivalent ratings across the UK.

Before the accommodation is rated, it is divided into three categories - Hotel, Guest Accommodation and Bed & Breakfast (B&B). This guide is solely concerned with the ratings applied to hotel accommodation.

Star Ratings One to Five

The rating system used gives hotels between one and five stars.

	The quality of the room and furnishings are acceptable. The hotel is likely to be smaller and privately owned. At least 75% of rooms will have en suite facilities, there will be a licensed bar and a dining room for breakfast. Staff are helpful and polite.
	Again, likely to be smaller, privately owned accommodation with well maintained rooms offering more space than one star accommodation. All rooms will have en suite facilities, and breakfast and dinner are available daily.
	More of a traditional hotel, likely to be larger than the one or two star hotels. More staff are employed, all rooms are ensuite, more spacious and will come with facilities such as a television and telephone. In addition to breakfast and dinner, light lunches will also be available. There will also be a laundry service.
	Accommodation at this level is more spacious and luxurious with good quality fittings. All rooms will have an en suite bath and shower. There will be a formal hotel reception, porters and other staff wearing uniforms available to assist you. The restaurant will be open daily serving a high standard of cuisine for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Room service will also be available 24 hours. Leisure facilities may also be available.
	Luxury accommodation and the best service available. Bedrooms and public areas are spacious with high quality décor. Meals provided in the restaurant are of "haute cuisine" standard. There are business facilities available such as conference rooms and high speed internet access, together with shopping and leisure facilities. Staff will be efficient, smart and well trained.
