Home Gym Buying Advice

Buying a home gym is a personal decision, but you should bear in mind the following factors:

  • The most important factor is, will I use the equipment once I have bought it? There is no point in having the very best of intentions, but ultimately adorning your spare room with an expensive and space consuming dust collector.
  • With the above in mind, buy a home gym that you will enjoy and feel motivated to use, yet will challenge you to progress to higher levels of fitness.
  • Buy equipment that can be adjusted for different levels of fitness, as you progress.
  • Make sure you have sufficient space for the equipment you intend to buy - low ceilings may get in the way of weights.
  • As with all things, you get what you pay for, but you are likely to find better value online.

What are the benefits of a home gym?

Home gyms generally concentrate on resistance work to build muscle (for men) and tone muscle (for women). Women should not fear developing huge muscles by doing weight training / resistance work as this is unlikely to occur - the male hormone testosterone is necessary to build big muscles. Ladies develop nicely toned muscles. I have noticed weight training to be particularly effective on "bingo wings" (underdeveloped tricep muscles) and great results can be achieved.

Weight training reduces the risk of osteoporosis - brittle bone disease.

When you gain muscle tone, your basal metabolic rate increases - ie you burn more calories even whilst sleeping as it takes more energy to maintain a blood supply to muscle than it does to fat.

You will be able to tone all body areas including arms, chest, shoulders, legs, back and stomach.

You will be able to exercise at a time to suit you. It's particularly useful if you are restricted to the home or do not want to exercise in front of other people.
