Appropriate outdoor clothing and footwear for hill walking

Hill walking can be an enjoyable activity, but you will need to dress appropriately. Clothing should keep you warm and dry, and protect you from wind, rain, snow etc, so the outer layer needs to be wind and waterproof. You should also consider wearing clothes that are "breathable" to allow sweat to evaporate, to keep you dry. You should also have waterproof and windproof gloves, and appropriate head gear as a third of our body's heat loss is through our heads.

Footwear will need to satisfy these requirements:

  • It should be waterproof and suitable for use in rain or snow.
  • The soles should have a good grip to help prevent you slipping.
  • The boots themselves should offer support to your feet and ankles.

Thick socks will make your boots more comfortable and offer additional warmth for your feet. Socks made from natural fibres offer the best insulation properties whilst allowing perspiration to evaporate. Natural fibres include cotton, wool and silk.

You can also wear gaiters in very wet conditions to help prevent water running down your legs into your boots.

Sleeping Bag Guide

  • sleeping bagsFilling - sleeping bags can be filled with either natural feathers (duck / goose down) or a synthetic equivalent (hollow fibre). Sleeping bags that have a synthetic filling are a lot cheaper, retain a degree of function even when damp and are more easily washed. However, synthetic insulation has a comparitively short life as the synthetic fibres, once compressed, do not regain their fullness, leading to a degradation of the sleeping bag's insulating properties.
  • Hood / collar - some sleeping bags have a hood, which helps to prevent heat loss through your head. Others have a collar which goes round your neck, again to prevent heat loss.
  • Season Ratings
From 2005, the new EN13537 : Requirements for Sleeping Bags came into force. Sleeping bags that meet the requirements of the legislation will display four temperatures.
Upper Limit - the highest ambient temperature for the comfort of an average man, without him sweating.
Comfort - the lowest ambient temperature for an average woman, at which she would be comfortable.
Lower Limit - the lowest ambient temperature for an average man, at which he would be comfortable.
Extreme - an ambient temperature below which an average woman would expect to be physically injured by the cold eg get hypothermia.
