A Guide to Reductil

What is it?

Reductil, (generic name Sibutramine, with the brand name "Meridia" in the US), belongs to a class of slimming drugs known as appetite suppressants. It works on the brain by blocking the action for the nerve cells connected with the release and reabsorbtion of serotonin. (Serotonin is a neurotransmitter connected with appetite). This blocking action causes the levels of serotonin to increase, which makes you feel full - hence you eat less food and subsequently lose weight.

Who would benefit from taking it?

Reductil will only be prescribed for you by your doctor if you have a Body Mass Index (BMI) in excess of 30, or alternatively a BMI in excess of 27 or more , with other health problems related to your weight.

Does it work?

Yes. In clinical trials, in combination with a low calorie diet and exercise (sorry - but you can't get away from those two), over three quarters of patients lost weight, with a corresponding increase in benefits to their health and self esteem.

Who should not take this drug?

You should not take this drug if:

• You have high blood pressure, because this drug can increase blood pressure in some patients.
• You are taking any medicines within the group called "monoamine oxidase inhibitors" or any other slimming pills that act on the brain, including herbal and over the counter remedies.
• You have had an allergic reaction to it.
• You have had any circulatory problems whatsoever including heart problems, angina and strokes.
• You are pregnant or breast feeding.
• You have an eating disorder.

Serious Side Effects
