Mini Motos / Pocket Bikes and Petrol Scooters

Mini motos, petrol and electric scooters are the latest trend to take the UK by storm. They are a great fun, are available in lots of colours and can be customised with a range of stickers that normally come with the bike.

A mini moto is actually a small motorbike with (usually) 11 inch wheels, no suspension and direct drive with no gears a centrifugal clutch. It will usually be equipped with disc brakes front and rear. Most bikes have a 49cc unrestricted engine - ie mopeds that are legally used on the road have a 50cc restricted engine preventing them from going above 30 miles an hour. Mini motos are unrestricted and can achieve speeds in excess of forty miles per hour. A tank of fuel will last about 25 minutes and these bikes will fit into the boot of the average car.

Midi motos are similar to mini motos, except they are slightly larger.

Please be aware that mini motos and petrol scooters are not road legal and cannot be used on roads or public footpaths - only private land. They can be used without a licence, tax, insurance or training so it is important to use them responsibly and take safety seriously. These bikes go fast!

MiniMoto Safety Tips

  • Mini motos are designed for adults and children aged over 12 years. However, teenagers should always be supervised when riding the minimoto by a responsible adult.
  • Full safety equipment should always be worn, including a helmet, elbow and knee pads.
  • Wear gloves, preferably with armour to protect your knuckles.
  • Mini motos are designed for use on smooth surfaces, not off road.
  • Do not carry extra passengers on the back - they are designed for 1 rider only.

The above guidelines are a bare minimum. You should also consider:

  • A suit designer for offering protection on a mini moto. If you have full motorcycle leathers already then use those, as they offer the most protection.
  • Wear suitable footwear - you can buy special minimoto boots.
  • Additional back protection.

Electric Scooters

Electric scooters are also available, but tend to be slower than petrol scooters having speeds of between about 7 and 20 mph. The speed you will be able to achieve will be affected by your weight, the amount of charge left in the battery and whether you are going up or downhill.

Typically you will be able to travel between about 7 and 15 miles on a single charge.
