streetwear hip hop urban Streetwear - What exactly is it?

There is no hard and fast definition of what streetwear is, but I will try here to describe what makes a piece of clothing "streetwear".

  • Streetwear is never work wear, whether your wearing a blue or a white collar worker. So, it most definately isn't a suit, shirt and tie or dark blue overalls.

  • Streetwear is never formal, although formal clothes can have streetwear influences.

  • Streetwear is influenced by certain kinds of sport, such as skate boarding and surfing, and dance such as "hip hop". Think of youths in the street on skate boards and dancers dancing to hip hop music. They are most likely to be wearing types of Streetwear.

  • There are different types of Streetwear, eg Urban, Hip Hop but the differences between them are unclear (to me, at any rate).

  • Types of streetwear clothing include printed T-shirts, hoodies, headwear, oversized jackets, baggie trousers (for hip hop dancing) and boots such as Doc Martens.

  • It is interesting to observe that if you attend an exercise class in "street dance" or "Urban Funk", the instructor is likely to be wearing baggie blousy trousers as opposed to the more traditional sports wear that instructors wear for other types of classes.

  • Streetwear is considered to be influenced by American subcultures including African Americans and Latinos.

  • Some people insist that Streetwear and Urban are two completely different styles. For example, Streetwear is said to be a retro 1980s style including hipster trousers, hoodies and trainers. Whereas Urban clothing is said to include more denim jackets, baggy clothes and white trainers. The picture above is more Urban than Street.
